DISTRICT NEEDS STATEMENT – 2011
COMMUNITY BOARD 13 – BROOKLYN
By Charles Reichenthal
Community Board District Manager
…And the wheel goes round and round…proclaimed a hit Perry Como song of the
50’s, and it presaged a magnificent growth for Coney Island, Brighton Beach, Sea
Gate, Gravesend, Bath Beach, and nearby Homecrest and Bensonhurst. As the
calendar flipped into the 21st Century, the shorefront area became the focus of
enterprising growth. With the support of the Mayor, Borough President, and
energetic City and State legislators, the southern Brooklyn landscape became an
important part of the planning for the entire future of the city.

Sea Gate Beacon
“Sounds” unorthodox, yet a person can
sing his or her way to health. Singing
improves one’s physical, emotional, and
spiritual well being. One doesn’t need
professional training—although that
helps—to do what comes naturally and
doesn’t cost a penny. And if singing off
key is a sensitive issue, then do it in
solitude. (more)

Our Urban Environment
One of the best things that I’ve enjoyed about
living in Coney Island for over twenty-five
years is having the opportunity to meet some
really fascinating people who also reside on the
peninsula. Below is an interview with one such
individual, Mrs. Elizabeth Wilson-Anstey, whom I
had the pleasure of meeting about four years ago.
How long have you lived in Sea Gate?
I’ve lived in Sea Gate for 15 years.
Tell me about the different hats that you wear?
1. I’m the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs at Weill Cornell Medical College in
New York City;
2. In 2010 I was appointed as the Northeast representative of the Committee on
Diversity Affairs, to the Group on Student Affairs of the Association of American
Medical Colleges;
3. I’m also the Founder and President of Empowerment and Equity Through
Education (EEE), a non-profit organization;
4. I’m a Wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, and sister; I’m also a mentor to high
school and college students. (full interview)

Alleged Sea Gate
‘Serial Killer’ Sentenced
to 30 years
for Identity Theft
By Derek Prall
For the Sea Gate Beacon
Russian- born Sea Gate resident Dmitriy Yakovlev was recently sentenced to 30
years in prison for multiple charges of identity theft, credit card and bank fraud
totaling multiple thousands of dollars in damages. However, it is believed that
Yakovlev’s crimes did not stop there. All three of his victims, Irina Malezhik, a
courthouse translator, Viktor Alekseyev, a jewelry importer and Michael Klien, an
NYPD mechanic disappeared under mysterious circumstances shortly after
meeting Yakovlev. It was insinuated during the trial that Yakovlev dismembered all
three individuals, and had preyed on his targets due to their reclusive nature,
believing that their disappearances would go
unnoticed. (more)
Occupied Wall Street
The Revolution Will Not Be Simple
By Derek Prall
For the Sea Gate Beacon
What started on September 17 as a small group of idealists encamped in Zuccotti
Park in the heart of New York City’s financial district has quickly turned into a
national movement, with tens of thousands of individuals from all walks of life
descending upon nearly a dozen major American cities to stand up against
corporate greed, political corruption and social injustice. Taking cues from the so-
called “Arab Spring” and the Spanish acampadas, these activists seek swift and
positive change for what they are calling “the 99%”, or more explicitly put, the ever-
increasing group of struggling, non-wealthy Americans. But what do these masses
occupying our nation’s financial centers exactly want?

Assemblyman Alec Brook-Krasny: We need to start creating jobs NOW
The American Jobs Act will put millions of Americans back to work
|
While many economists agree the recession ended two years ago, it is an
unfortunate reality that millions of Americans are still struggling to find work. In
August, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the unemployment rate
was at 9.1 percent and affecting approximately 14 million Americans. Today,
job creation is practically at a standstill. Now more than ever, we need initiatives
to help get people back to work. (more)
